Students Engaged in the Arts

The Imagination Mural Project has added a new, vibrant mural to our lineup of the many collaborative works of art at schools surrounding Lane County in Oregon. This permanent fixture at Cascade Middle School will continue to develop as students add to it each year.

The collaboration was between our muralist, Bayne Gardner, and Students at Cascade Middle School. It all began with several rough sketches and the one with the cougar was ultimately approved by the school.

The concept on this mural was to use a cougar, the school’s mascot, and mountains and trees to frame the students work.

Ten students from each grade were selected to be the muralists for their grade level. Over 30 students added their own thoughts and symbols to the mural, leaving room for more additions in years to come!

The student participation was coordinated by Michele Hanely, the Artcore teacher at Cascade. After Bayne painted the mural, Michele put a school wide call out to potential artists that may want to participate.  From there she selected around 30 student to add their statements on the mural.

Bayne finished the final touches on the Cascade mural on December 13.  The selected students continued to paint on it until the end of the year.   According to Michele, the project was a big success:

For a student to be able to walk down their hallway and point to the mural and say— here is where I have impacted my school— that’s powerful. It’s a lasting memory for those students who have contributed so far and those who will continue to build into it in coming years.

The words and phrases students chose thoughtfully and deliberately to add to the mural were focused around the legacy they hope to leave behind and their future goals — from “you can succeed- no exceptions” to “always be willing to lend a hand” — these are positive and profound sentiments that will be read over and over again by passing students. The mural, front and center when you walk in the door, welcomes you with open arms to Cascade, providing a sense of warmth, encouragement and support — which is exactly the type of individuals you find within the building.

Partnering with Bayne and Imagination International to pull this off really warms my heart as an art teacher- I can’t think of a better use of my time than encouraging students to use art to state their intentions and uplift others.

We can't thank Bayne and Michele enough for helping us make a positive impact on the creative lives of students in our community.
